BUFFALO COAL

Buffalo Coal is a coal producer with two mines in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.

The two mines, Magdalena and Aviemore, have substantial coal resources. Magdalena is an underground mine, situated approximately 24 km north of Dundee and supplies bituminous raw coal to the on-site coal washing plant.

The Aviemore reserves are currently mined at the Aviemore East Mine, which is an underground anthracite mine supplying raw coal to the Coalfields washing facility, approximately 14 km by road from the mine site, in Dundee, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The mine is approaching the end of its life.

Two projects have been identified to further extend the life of mine of the Aviemore Mine, viz:

  • Balgray (short- to medium-term): This decommissioned underground mine project is based on utilising the old Balgray adit which was previously owned by Anglo Coal in the 1960’s.
  • Aviemore North Adit (long-term): This greenfields underground project has been developed to the level of feasibility for both the underground mine design and the mine access, ROM surface infrastructure including road transport to the Coalfields site for beneficiation.
